StellarScape is an immersive multimedia performance synthesizing music, science, visual art, and technology. The performance includes live musicians, electronic music, and dance, collaborating with interactive cinematography - fusing kinesthetic and acoustic sensing with cosmic simulation, in real time. This convergence research collaboration is catalyzed by the union of concepts at the confluence of astronomy, humanity, artistic expression through music and dance, and socio-technical experience.
It’s a story of a massive star, from its birth to its death, echoing the theme of darkness and light.
It’s a story about us. We are stardust brought to life.

Astronomical and Human ConnectionStellarScape has an astronomical context. Stars are born in the murk of cold molecular clouds. They burst into life as fusion starts, then forge elements in their nuclear furnace cores. Massive stars die in cataclysmic explosions, casting heavy elements into space and leaving behind a heart of darkness: a black hole. In this creative performance piece, stars become metaphors for growth and regeneration. StellarScape is the story of us. We are in the universe and the universe is in us. We are stardust brought to life.

Interactivity between Art and Data
The project will feature four musicians on stage, an eight-channel audio system for surround sound, live audio processing, fixed media video, and live video processing driven by dancers’ motion capture data, and projection mapping of immersive video.

Engaging the Universal Origins of Matter and Life
The new star fluctuates and pulses as it stabilizes as a sphere of plasma. Deep within, hydrogen is fusing into helium, a mountain’s worth every second, with a tiny fraction of mass liberated as pure energy.
Data Visualization and Astrophysical Simulation
StellarScape is an unprecedented combination of music, dance, and cinematography, blended with state-of-the-art data visualization and astrophysical simulation. The theme is astronomical, but the vision is humanistic.
