SeaSphere
A multimedia performance installation exploring humanity's relationship with the sea
Mission
The SeaSphere is a large format multimedia performance taking the audience on a journey to explore a new human life in the sea. Diving, or the art and science of placing people underwater, is central to our relationship both with, and within the ocean. These intimate and personal interactions we have as divers, with the ocean environment, bring forward inspiration that can be conveyed to the community. The survival of our species on this Blue Planet inevitably requires a human to ocean assimilation where our role here on Earth is balanced and sustainable. As humans continue to explore, advancement is nurtured across all the humanities disciplines, and innovative developments are cast into motion.
The SeaSphere takes the audience through the cyclical assimilation cast forward through human exploration, where we first explore, make discoveries, institute commerce, manage resources, and innovate to perpetuate advancement–all through the perspective of the working diver; those whose lives are immersed beneath the sea. Tasks commonly undertaken underwater, by humans, are revealed and showcase humanity’s role with and within the ocean.
Performance Installation
The Sphere of the Aquanaut will be set inside of an 8′ spherical water filled acrylic tank. This symbolizes our water-filled planet, our being born ‘of water’ and embodies the concept of assimilating ‘to water’.
The sphere will be illuminated externally and from within to achieve the desired visual effects. The performer, a diver, will be inside the sphere and equipped with sophisticated bubble-free life support apparatus that represents how innovation helps to drive us towards a future human permanence underwater. Voice/audio from diver to audience and/or director is possible.
Diving Technology
SeaSphere will leverage several recent advancements in diving and undersea technology, from life support utilized by the performer, to lighting and projection capabilities that have rarely been experienced by the public viewer. Many technologies are used every day by marine scientists and working divers, and SeaSphere will prove to be an instrumental venue to share these elements with the community.
